En palabras de Edmund Burke, estadista y filósofo anglo-irlandés, en su «Indagación filosófica sobre el origen de nuestras ideas acerca de lo sublime y de lo bello»: «Es preciso concluir que la belleza, por la mayor parte, es alguna cualidad de los cuerpos que obra maquinalmente en el espíritu humano por medio de los sentidos.» Resumiendo, cualquiera de los sentidos puede estimular una cualidad única de belleza. Entonces, ¿existe una correlación entre los sentidos del oído y la visión y la actividad en la misma región del cerebro, o en regiones diferentes?
En el estudio referido, los investigadores evaluaron a veintiún individuos que presentaban distintas características étnicas y culturales. Les pidieron que calificasen una serie de pinturas o fragmentos de composiciones musicales como «bello», «indiferente» o bien «feo». Posteriormente se les presentaron esas mismas pinturas o piezas musicales mientras eran sometidos a un escáner de imagen por resonancia magnética funcional (RMf) para medir la actividad en su encéfalo.
El profesor Semir Zeki, del Wellcome Laboratory of Neurobiology del University College de Londres, y su colaborador el Dr. Tomohiro Ishizu descubrieron que la corteza orbitofrontal medial -que según explican forma parte del centro del placer y recompensa en el encéfalo- presentaba una actividad más intensa en el encéfalo de los participantes cuando éstos escuchaban la música o contemplaban las imágenes que habían calificado de bellas.
También observaron que no había ninguna zona específica del encéfalo que guardase una correlación general con las obras de arte clasificadas como feas. No obstante, a diferencia de la exposición a algo bello, la exposición visual a algo considerado feo activaba varias regiones del encéfalo.
Ya estudios anteriores habían asociado la corteza orbitofrontal medial con la apreciación de la belleza; la aportación del estudio científico referido estriba en que la misma área del encéfalo se activa ante la belleza visual y auditiva en los mismos individuos. Por consiguiente, la belleza sí que existe como concepto abstracto en el encéfalo, según los dos autores.
Además de la corteza orbitofrontal medial, la visual también se activa ante estímulos visuales. En concreto, los dos científicos observaron que esta última región registraba una mayor actividad cuando los individuos estudiados observaban una pintura que cuando escuchaban música, y que ocurría lo contrario en el caso de la corteza auditiva.
Otro hallazgo interesante de este estudio es que la actividad en el núcleo caudado, situado cerca del centro del encéfalo, se disparaba en proporción a la belleza visual relativa de la pintura. Ya otros investigadores habían observado que el núcleo caudado guardaba relación con el amor en el sentido romántico, sugiriendo que la relación entre la belleza y el amor tiene una manifestación neuronal.
«El asunto de si existen ciertas características que hagan a los objetos hermosos ha sido debatido durante miles de años tanto por artistas como teóricos del arte, pero no se ha logrado establecer una conclusión adecuada», apuntó el profesor Semir Zeki. «Algo similar ha ocurrido con la cuestión de si poseemos un sentido abstracto de la belleza, es decir, un sentido que despierte en el ser humano una experiencia emocional de la misma intensidad sea cual sea su fuente, por ejemplo acústica o visual. Ya era hora de que la neurobiología abordase estas cuestiones fundamentales», añadió.
«Prácticamente cualquier cosa puede considerarse arte, pero nuestra tesis es que sólo aquellas creaciones cuya experiencia guarda relación con la actividad en la corteza orbitofrontal medial entrarían en la categoría de arte bello», indicó. «Por ejemplo, una pintura de Francis Bacon puede tener mucho mérito desde el punto de vista artístico pero no poseer la cualidad de bello. Lo mismo podría decirse sobre algunos de los compositores clásicos más "difíciles". Aunque sus composiciones puedan ser vistas como más «artísticas» que la música rock, en quienes encuentren este estilo moderno más gratificante y bello, anticipamos que la actividad sería más intensa en la región encefálica indicada al oír a Van Halen que a Wagner.»
